Students build winning car
UNSW students defeated five teams from other Australian universities to win the inaugural Australian Formula Society of Automotive Engineers (FSAE) competition with a racing car they designed, built and marketed.
"One of the great things about this competition is that it encourages students to design and market a formula race car as well as the actual building of the car, although we did that too", explained post-graduate student and project coordinator Nathan Groenhout.
"We are really exhausted but all the hard work and late nights have paid off. Winning the Best Overall Performance in the Australian Class is amazing. It has been a really big weekend".
During the judging, the car's design was assessed and the group had to market the car to a group of potential buyers. The car underwent technical and safety assessments and the overall cost was considered. Then the car took part in trials to study its endurance, acceleration and fuel economy. The UNSW team also won the award for the best fuel economy.
"This is the first time there has been an Australian competition. Between January and December our team designed and built a car that competed on equal footing with more experienced teams from the US who came over for our competition. It's just amazing", Nathan said.
The SAE competition has been running for 20 years in the US but this is the first time it has been held in Australia. The event attracts major sponsors such as Ford, Toyota, Shell, and Goodyear, who see it as an opportunity to recruit bright, young graduates.
