Residents' lottery dream comes true
Overjoyed residents in Harpurhey are celebrating after winning a TV vote to scoop £39,000 which will realize their dream of creating a children's community garden.
Baytree Residents' Association beat a rival scheme from Trafford in a phone poll to decide who would win the cash from the Big Lottery Fund in the People's Millions contest.
Viewers' support means that they can now go ahead with their proposals to turn an overgrown allotment into a real community asset. The site will include a wildlife garden and a small adventure area.
Graham South, chairman of Baytree Residents' Association, said: We are a highly delighted group. This is a very positive step for the young people of this area. All the renewal work which is going on here is great for adults but doesn't necessarily mean that much to children so we wanted to give them something, that was theirs. It will help teach them new skills and hopefully give them a real sense of ownership and pride in where they live.
The competition success is another fillip for the Baytree Renewal Area. The area (which consists of Ash Street, Orchid Street, Baywood Street and Cypress Street) has benefited from significant improvements thanks to funding from the Housing Market Renewal scheme.
These have included a major facelift and re-roofing scheme involving the installation of photovoltaic cells which will potentially generate 20 per cent of each house's annual electricity needs.
A 'streetscape' environmental project will see a remodeling of the existing layout to introduce better traffic calming measures create new gardens for selected properties and provide landscaped community areas.
The area is also part of the wider transformation of Harpurhey. High quality facilities such as the £4 million Family and Fitness Centre, MANCAT's new North Manchester College and the soon-to-open North Manchester library have given the area a renewed focus.
City Council leader Richard Leese said: The residents' association's success in this competition highlights the overwhelming community spirit which is one of the area's greatest assets and I congratulate everyone involved.
This win offers further compelling evidence of the momentum which is growing behind the regeneration of Harpurhey and the whole of North Manchester.
Groundwork's Community Link Officer Laura Jagota said: Groundwork has been supporting the group to create their community garden. Their determination and enthusiasm to improve their local area is commendable and they should be very proud of their achievements.
