Unexpected scholarship arrives just in time
Amanda Spence and her parents were less than thrilled about borrowing another $15,000 for her final year of college, but they weren't sure how else they were going to fund it.
Then came a letter announcing she'd won a scholarship sweepstakes that she'd long forgotten entering. The amount is $15,000.
It really does take a lot of the edge off. She's able to go back and finish the degree. She wants without taking anymore loans and that's a big help, said her mother, Lori. When you've got four kids and they all go to college, this is a big help.
"We're very grateful", said her father, the Rev. Lynn Spence, pastor of Clifton Springs United Methodist Church.
Amanda Spence, 20, of 13 Pleasant St., is a third-year senior at Alfred State College pursuing an associate's degree in marketing. She already holds an associate's degree in entrepreneurship. Each semester costs about $7,500 with books.
"When you are trying to finance an education, every penny counts", she said. "This scholarship will help tremendously with those costs. It still feels a little unbelievable, but I'm very excited to be accepting this award".
The scholarship, presented Nov. 18, was the second-highest of four awards from Key Bank USA's Education Resources division. Key gave the scholarships, which totaled $50,000, to celebrate its 50th anniversary. More than 35,000 students, 18 years or older entered the sweepstakes last spring; winners were drawn in July.
"I didn't expect to get anything out of it", Spence said. "I was very surprised and very happy that I received it".
