Need for Speed: Most Wanted has stayed ahead of competition for an eighth week running.

The street racing title remains the top selling UK game, with its closest rival, King Kong, climbing up from four to two in the charts.

The only new entry of the week, Ridge Race 6 for the Xbox 360, did not even make to the top 20, debuting at number 25.

Elsewhere Star Wars: Battlefront II and Call of Duty 2 enjoyed a resurgence in sales.

British gamers have snapped up a million units of Nintendo's DS since it hit the shops in March, 2005.

The Japanese game giant said sales were helped by the games such as Nintendogs and Mario Kart DS.

The DS was a popular Christmas gift, though some gamers were left disappointed as stock sold out across the UK.

Its main competitor, Sony's PlayStation Portable, had sold 610,000 units up until the middle of December.

Warcraft proves big hit in Europe.

Online fantasy game World of Warcraft now has more than one million players in Europe.

The total has been reached although the game was only launched in Europe less than 12 months ago.

Blizzard said the game's popularity helped it top sales charts for full price PC games in Europe in 2005. Forthcoming expansions will introduce new races and areas to explore.

The news takes the global Warcraft population past the 5.5 million mark.
