The Pennsylvania Lottery
The Pennsylvania Lottery's new format of drawing two daily numbers a day debuted to mixed reviews Tuesday around the Mid-Mon Valley.
A random sampling of regular lottery customers revealed varied opinions on the decision to draw three- and four-digit numbers at 1:35 p.m. and 7 p.m. each day.
The commonwealth traditionally has conducted drawings only at 7 p.m.
Bill Brown, of Donora, says he plays the lottery, but not every day.
He did buy tickets for Tuesday's initial afternoon drawing.
"Since it's the first time, I'll give it a shot", Brown said after purchasing his tickets at Torn Page in Monessen.
Brown was the first player at Torn Page to buy a ticket for the afternoon drawing.
"I don't think it's a good idea", Brown said. "Too many people don't have the money and will gamble away trying to win two drawings instead of one".
Luigi Stringa, of Monessen, also indicated that one drawing a day is plenty.
"Once a day is already too much," Stringa laughed. "I'll play if I have to, but it's too much money".
"I think the lottery is getting out of hand. They are trying to make too much money".
Meanwhile, one player who likes the idea of an extra drawing is Carlos Campieri, of Charleroi.
Campieri, who was busy playing numbers at Cross-Roads in Charleroi, said, he would buy tickets for more drawings.
"I think it's a good idea", Campieri said. "People gamble. People go to the race track every day, too".
"I play the lottery every day. If they draw five times a day, I'll play five times a day".
John Koval, of Monessen, is a daily lottery player who said he likes the new addiction.
As he purchased his numbers at Eastgate Exxon in Monessen, Koval said the afternoon drawing will benefit those who can't always buy tickets for the nightly drawing.
"I'll play both", he said.
Another customer at Eastgate Exxon, however, was not as pleased with the new format.
"I don't like it," he said, refusing to give his name. "Do they want to take all my money?"
"I'm only playing the night number and that's it".
He then played a number for Tuesday's 1:35 p.m. drawing and quickly said, "I'm playing one number because it's the first day. But that's it".
Jerry Saksun, owner of Torn Page, expressed little optimism regarding the extra drawing.
"Three regulars came in this morning and told me they aren't playing the daily number anymore", Saksun said. "They said they would play 'Cash 5,' the 'Super 6' and the 'Power Ball,' but they won't play the daily number at all".
"The majority of the people I've heard from don't seem in favor of (two drawings)", he said.
"They think it is too expensive. My customers are mostly on fixed incomes and felt they had money for one drawing a day, but not enough for two".
Saksun fears the new format could adversely effect lottery sales, at least at his business.
"But we'll have to wait and see", he said. "It may be too early to tell".
