Legalized online casinos in South Africa - to be or not to be?
It was recently reported that the South African government is pondering over the legalization of online casino gambling. Currently, the odds of legalizing Internet gaming are remarkably high, especially after National Gambling Board members expressed their positive attitude towards online casinos to Mandisi Mpahlwa, South Africa's Trade and Industry Minister.
The decision whether or not to legalize the operation of online casinos in South Africa is rather complicated. Legislators will have to take into consideration the fact that, in South Africa, only 10% of the households have a fixed telephone line, not to mention a connection to the World Wide Web. However, online casino industry insiders believe that there is room for major economic growth.
Thibedi Majake, National Gambling Board CEO, was reported as saying that the Board had almost no other option but to recommend the legalization of online casinos, because the country would probably benefit from this industry. The Board's report concludes that the approval of online gaming is expected to generate positive side-effects, such as providing legal protection for local punters, preventing criminal influences in the casino industry and promoting interactive casinos in South Africa.
