NFL Football Betting Lines
What are NFL Betting Lines?
The two most popular ways of expressing odds in American football are point spreads and betting lines. We will briefly go over betting lines or money lines in this article.
The easiest way to understand a betting line, is to think of it as an indication of the amount you need to bet to win $200 or the amount you will win if you bet $200. Betting lines are expressed with a negative number, say -210, or a positive number, say +210. A negative betting line number indicates what you must wager to win $200, and a positive betting line number indicates what you will win if you wager $200.
If you bet $210 on a team with a betting line of -210, and they win, you will win $200 (plus return of your original $210 bet).
If you bet $200 on a team with a money line of +210, and they win, you will win $210 (plus return of the original $200 bet). Unlike point spread bets, the teams do not have to win by any particular number of points.
Of course you can place bets above that or below the $200 mark, and the payoff is the same ratio as before.
