Multi-Player Poker is becoming the most popular form of online gaming
Poker players in Northern Ireland are the most profitable gamblers, a survey of online players has suggested.
A study of over 10,000 regular online poker players found that card players in the province pipped their closest rivals in London to the top spot.
For every £1,000 staked, Northern Ireland players win an extra £19.30 compared to the national average, and £37.20 more than poker players from Yorkshire and Humberside, the region with the poorest poker players in the UK.
The figures come from a huge mass of data accumulated , one of the busiest poker sites in Europe.
At peak times, as many as 2,500 people play against each other on up to 350, 10-seat virtual tables.
Online Multi-Player Poker is becoming the most popular form of online gaming in the UK, with growth in player numbers which is increasing at 20% per month. Professional player Roy Brindley said the survey suggested that Northern Ireland poker players were a force to be reckoned with.
"Whilst anyone can win at poker in the short term with a bit of luck, it takes skill to win consistently", he said.
"There are some excellent individual pros in Northern Ireland, but this report shows that quality play runs deep".
